You change your VAT registration details, including your business address, bank details and (subject to HMRC approval) your VAT scheme, either online through your VAT online account on the Government Gateway or by completing form VAT484 and posting it to HMRC. You must tell HMRC about a change of name, trading name or main business address within 30 days. Changing your VAT scheme is not automatic: HMRC reviews your request and decides whether to grant it.

The two routes cover almost every kind of change to your registration:

  • Online through your VAT online account (your Government Gateway account) is the quickest option.
  • By post using form VAT484 if you cannot use the online service.

Below we cover the three most common changes: scheme, business address and bank details.

How to change your VAT scheme

Once you are registered for VAT, there may come a point where you want to change the VAT scheme you are on, for example moving from the standard scheme to the flat rate scheme.

To do this you apply directly to HMRC. Sign in to your VAT online account and request the change, or complete form VAT484 and post it. The important thing to understand is that you have no automatic right to switch. HMRC will review your business situation and decide whether to grant the request. The same applies if you want to deregister for VAT because your business has shrunk: HMRC controls that process and has the final say.

Not sure which scheme you are currently on? You can check your current scheme by signing in to your VAT online account, where your registration details and scheme are shown.

VAT scheme eligibility thresholds (2026)

Each optional scheme has its own turnover limits:

  • Flat Rate Scheme – join if your VAT taxable turnover is £150,000 or less (excluding VAT). You must leave once turnover exceeds £230,000 (including VAT).
  • Cash Accounting Scheme – join if your estimated VAT taxable turnover is £1.35 million or less. You must leave once it goes over £1.6 million.
  • Annual Accounting Scheme – join if your estimated VAT taxable turnover is £1.35 million or less. You must leave once it goes over £1.6 million.

How to change your VAT business address

To change the business address on your VAT registration, use the same two routes. Update it in your VAT online account, or report the change on form VAT484. HMRC asks that you notify a change to your business name, trading name or main business address within 30 days of it happening, so do not leave it once you have moved.

A change of address usually goes through as a straightforward update rather than an approval, unlike a scheme change.

How to change your bank details

Your VAT repayment and Direct Debit bank details can also be updated through your VAT online account or on form VAT484. One exception: if you are on the Annual Accounting Scheme, you change your Direct Debit details by writing to HMRC’s Annual Accounting Registration Unit rather than through the standard form.

What about changing your VAT return periods?

Changing which months your VAT quarters fall on is a separate task and is not done on form VAT484. If that is what you are after, read our guide on how to change your VAT periods instead.

Yes. You have no automatic right to change scheme. HMRC reviews your circumstances and decides whether to grant the request.
